Manchester United should sign Sagna if Rafael leaves

Reports at the weekend suggested Manchester United manager David Moyes was willing to listen to offers for first choice right-back Rafael due to the Brazilian's poor displays this season.

Rafael has failed to replicate the kind of form that made him one of the first names on Sir Alex Ferguson's teamsheet during the Scotsman's final year in charge of Manchester United.

Moyes may be forced into purchasing an entire back four in the summer as Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra are all expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.

The three aforementioned players will be a huge miss in the dressing room as they bring an incredible amount of experience both on and off the pitch.

Moyes may choose to hand Chris Smalling and Phil Jones the chance to impress in the heart of Manchester United's defence when Vidic and Ferdinand end their long-term affiliation with the Premier League champions.

Both Smalling and Jones - despite representing both Manchester United and England for a number of years - are still nowhere near as experienced as Vidic and Ferdinand.

Manchester United will need a senior head in their back four and that man should be Arsenal's Bacary Sagna.

The Frenchman remains one of the best right-back's in the Premier League and could be tempted away from Arsenal if Manchester United offer the defender one last big contract.

Sagna is out of the contract at the end of the season so Moyes would not have to fork out a large sum on the 31-year-old Frenchman.

That would free up fees to hand Sagna a large signing-on fee and a better contract. The former Auxerre defender is currently earning £60,000 a week, which is well in Manchester United's price wage.

The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Galatasaray are said to interested in signing Sagna on a free in the summer, however the Arsenal defender would surely favour a move to Manchester United over the aforementioned trio.

Sagna would have to play second fiddle to Branislav Ivanovic and Pablo Zabaleta if he was to join either Chelsea or Manchester City and a move to Turkey would surely be a step down for a player of the right-back's calibre.

Moyes may look to sign Everton's Seamus Coleman in the summer if he does show Rafael the door, however I believe the Scotsman should save his money on rebuilding his midfield and sign Sagna on a free transfer at the end of the season.

What do you think Manchester United fans? Would you prefer to sign Sagna on a Bosman or would you want Moyes to fork out around £20million on Coleman? Have your say in the comments box below.
