St. Louis has a rich history of soccer going back decades. But currently it doesn't have a team in the MLS or any of the leagues below the pinnacle of North American soccer.

But now two men are trying to change that.

According to the River Front Times, Tony Glavin, owner and coach of the St. Louis Lions, and Andrew Haines, owner of the St. Louis Ambush indoor soccer team, are submitting an application and campaigning for investments for a new professional United Soccer Leagues team in 2015.

The two created a website recently in order to gauge local interest for a USL side, and they make no secret of what their ultimate goal is; joining the MLS

"We felt the timing was right," Glavin said. "This has always been my goal. I think the area has been crying out for something … St. Louis has a rich history in soccer. We want to capture that."

"This area would like to see an MLS team," he added. "If we do have a USL team, part of our initiative is to connect with an MLS team. If we're going to invest in a USL professional team, we want to build a foundation with the potential to go beyond USL."

St. Louis has been known as a hotbed for the sport for decades. Numerous members of the famous 1950 US World Cup team hailed from the city, while more recent standout players from the area include Steve Ralston, Taylor Twellman, Brad Davis and Will Bruin.

The city has also held various international exhibitions, with matches featuring Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Inter Milan drawing huge crowds last summer.

The area's large Bosnian community has turned out in their numbers to support their national side, as you can see in the picture above.

Football teams in St. Louis have struggled in the past, but now with these two men and the rise of soccer in the States, maybe it's finally time for one to succeed.
