Chelsea eye move for £53m Man United target

Chelsea are set to rival Manchester United for the summer signing of Paris Saint-Germain heavyweight Edinson Cavani, according to sources in France.

French newspaper Le 10 Sport, citing L’Equipe, claims that Jose Mourinho is preparing to battle United for the Uruguayan star’s signature at the end of the season, and wants to bring him to Stamford Bridge to bolster his frontline.

Chelsea’s shortcomings up top have been well documented this season and, whether it’s disputes over Samuel Eto’o’s age or mystery surrounding the futures of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, it looks as though the Special One is targeting major changes in time for next year.

The Blues have already been named in connection with Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, with Mourinho himself playing up talk of a potential summer move. However it’s likely that Cavani isn’t too far away from his thoughts, with the 27-year-old reportedly unsettled at the Parc des Princes.

At £53million he won’t come cheap, but that’s unlikely to deter either United or Chelsea, who will both have the money to make a deal happen if push comes to shove.
