New England Patriots to release safety

New England Patriots are set to release safety Steve Gregory, according to agent David Canter.

The 31-year-old Gregory started 23 games for the Patriots over the last two seasons.

In 26 games with New England, Gregory racked up 116 tackles, two forced fumbles and three interceptions (all in the 2012 season).

In cutting Gregory, the Patriots will save $2.85 million towards the 2014 salary cap, according to ESPN Boston’s Field Yates. In his nine NFL seasons, Gregory has totaled 379 tackles and seven interceptions.

Second-year pro Duron Harmon will be among the New England safeties who could see a bigger role in 2014 without Gregory in the defensive backfield, unless the Pats look for a new safety in the draft.

Gregory is perhaps most famous for being the defender that returned Mark Sanchez's infamous 'butt-fumble' for a touchdown against the New York Jets on Thanksgiving 2012.

Any chance to watch this again (and again and again).
