The Carolina Panthers today franchise tagged defensive end Greg Hardy, per reports.

After prolonged debate about whether the 2014 Pro-Bowler would sign a long term deal, the team have gone ahead and placed a tag on the player with Monday's March 3. deadline looming.

Hardy, who had a commanding season for the Panthers last season with 59 tackles and 15 sacks, is now looking forward to the prospect of a one-year big money deal.

The two sides still have until July to figure out a long-term deal should they wish, but in reality the decision means Hardy will play one more year at the Panthers before again having the opportunity to enter free agency.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was first to report the news  which follows that of the New Orleans Saints tying down Jimmy Graham with their franchise tag earlier in the day.

2 down, 3 to go in GMS' franchise tag predictions.
