Former General Manager of the Toronto Raptors, Bryan Colangelo, admitted today that he tried to tank the team in 2012.

Speaking as part of a panel at the 2014 Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, according to's Jeff Goodman, Colangelo revealed the admission to the crowd:

"Admittedly, I will say I tried to tank a few years ago."

The revelation is believed to be in direct relation to a game against the New York Knicks in 2012 during the lockout-shortened season, but Colangelo insisted that he never told his coach to try and lose games.

Moreover, the ex-GM, who left his position with the Raptors in May 2013, it is thought that the decision was in order to improve their draft order with the likes of Anthony Davis and Damian Lillard entering the 2012 draft.

Ultimately the Raptors ended that season with a 23-43 record and the eighth overall pick in the draft, picking guard Terrence Ross.

His admission is likely to gain him some criticism from some corners of the basketball community.

What do you think? Is tanking ever acceptable?
