Brian Orakpo gets franchise tag from Washington Redskins

Football News

Washington Redskins have today used their franchise tag on linebacker Brian Orakpo.

The move had been expected as the two sides failed to negotiate a longer term deal in recent days.

Orakpo led the Redskins in sacks last campaign with 11 overall as the franchise finished the campaign with a disappointing 3-13 record.

The three-time Pro-Bowler will earn $11.455 million for the 2014 season as a result of the tag but could still commit to a multi-year deal should there be an agreement before the July deadline.

He was drafted by the Redskins in the first round back in 2009, and approaching his 28th birthday, the franchise are clearly keen to keep him in Washington.

With today marking the deadline for teams to use franchise tags it remains to be seen if any other franchises look to tie down their prized assets on one-year deals ahead of the 3pm ET deadline.
