Liverpool owner John Henry confirmed at the weekend that Arsenal did meet the release clause written into the contract of Luis Suarez, but the Merseyside club were still able to block a transfer. A video of Henry’s admission has now emerged.

The pursuit of Suarez was one of the most high-profile stories of the summer transfer window as Arsene Wenger strived desperately to bring the Uruguay international to north London before the deadline.

Arsenal made a number of bids to prise Suarez away from Anfield, with the club’s offer of £40,000,001 submitted with the understanding that it would trigger the buyout clause in the player’s Liverpool contract.

Liverpool dismissed the proposal from Arsenal, despite their accurate interpretation of Suarez’s deal, and Henry confirmed that the Gunners had done enough to being negotiations with the player himself.

The Reds, however, frustrated at the way Fernando Torres had left for Chelsea against their wishes took a legal gamble by denying Suarez a move, and the 27-year-old eventually signed a lucrative new contract with Liverpool.

John Henry’s surprise admission can be seen in the video above. Thanks to 101greatgoals for the spot.
