Amir Khan delivered the strongest hint yet that he is prepared to lay down the foundations for a 2014 showdown with Floyd Mayweather in the last 24 hours, using Twitter to call out the pound-for-pound king's friend Adrien Broner.

Mayweather delivered a snub to the former world champion by choosing Marcos Maidana as his next opponent for a May 3rd clash in Las Vegas, following months of indecision over a future foe.

Khan has been left in limbo but could face Broner on the undercard of that bout to pave the way for a mega-money Mayweather meeting later this year, a prospect the Bolton-born welterweight is ready to entertain.

He used Twitter last night to blast Broner's conduct following a mauling at the hands of Maidana last year, before calling on the 'Problem' to put up or shut up if a fight is to be made.

Khan Tweeted: "Broner, you didn't even give an interview after your last fight [a one-sided beating by Maidana]. Instead you cried your way out of the ring like a baby.

"Broner should keep quiet. [Paulie] Malignaggi beat him but didn't get it. Maidana the fight after destroyed him and I would make him retire.

"If Broner wants to fight me I'm ready. Please can you get your legal team to reply to my team!"

British fight fans would love Khan to snub the bright lights of Vegas in favour of a domestic dust-up with regular verbal sparring partner Kell Brook, but Khan's social media joust has also recently been extended to the Matchroom star.

Brook was plainly told to step up in terms of competition to secure a career-best pay day, as Khan Tweeted: "On a serious note kel you need to step up ur opponents instead of facing Alvaro Robles who no1 has heard of, Does he even box? Lmao."

The 27-year-old is back in the United Kingdom weighing up his options, but time is running out to end a full year of inactivity with a fight that moves him closer to the upper echelon of the sport.
