Manchester United appear to face yet more reputable European competition for the signing of Mats Hummels, with talkSPORT reporting that Juventus are now in the running for the Borussia Dortmund defender's signature.

The aforementioned source suggests that Juve have joined the battle for Hummels, with manager Antonio Conte confident he can beat the Red Devils.

25-year-old centre-back Hummels - a seasoned international with 28 caps for his native Germany - has comfortably established himself as one of the world's best defenders since permanently switching to Dortmund from Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich following a successful loan spell in 2009.

Repeatedly solid and stellar form under Jurgen Klopp at Signal Iduna Park has seen Hummels linked with a move away from the club, with Manchester United and also La Liga champions Barcelona linked with a potential move for the player.

Just who will come out on top in such a colossal transfer battle is anyone's guess at this stage.

While it certainly does not appear to be a certainty that he will depart Dortmund, the imminent loss of leading striker Robert Lewandowski to Bayern this summer must surely have got one or two of the Pole's teammates mulling over their own futures.

Barcelona will definitely have a defensive void to fill this summer, with Spanish stalwart Carles Puyol having announced his intention to depart the Camp Nou at the end of the season.

Similarly, Manchester United boss David Moyes will presumably be looking to significantly bolster his squad in all areas after overseeing such a disappointing start to life at Old Trafford, particularly in the centre-back area given the fact that captain Nemanja Vidic has agreed to join Inter Milan at the end of the season.

However, Manchester United - who currently sit seventh in the Premier League - are unlikely to be in a position to offer Champions League football next season - something that could prove hugely detrimental in the transfer market.

Juventus, who are 11 points clear at the summit of Serie A, could well be an attractive destination for a player of Hummels' quality.
