Sir Alex Ferguson surprised some pub quiz regulars after the Manchester United icon entered his own team into an even taking place at the Burnside Hotel in Glasgow earlier this week. But the former Red Devils manager was unable to secure the type of result he was accustomed to.

Ferguson formed a team to take on the assembled quizzers, reports the Daily Star, with his wife Cathy, the owner of the hotel and other relatives of the Old Trafford legend called in for their expertise.

The 72-year-old led Manchester United to unrivalled success during his illustrious 26-year reign at the club but, on this occasion, had to settle for third place as the more established teams were able to triumph in the quiz.

Ferguson is reported to have joined in some banter with the opposition, even calling some of them ‘a bunch of cheats’, but happily posed for photographs and signed autographs after the faux hostilities had ended.

The Scot won an incredible 13 Premier League titles during his time as the manager of Manchester United, with Ferguson moving aside at the end of last season for David Moyes to ascend to the Old Trafford throne.

Moyes’ tenure has not gone to plan, however, with Manchester United having as good as relinquished their league title, while they are in severe danger of missing out on European competition for next season.
