Tottenham have identified Valencia centre-back Jeremy Mathieu as a potential replacement for Jan Vertonghen.

The Daily Star suggest the north London outfit are making plans to deal with the possibility of losing the Belgium international in the summer.

Vertonghen has been linked with moves to Barcelona and Manchester United in recent weeks, as both clubs are looking to sign a new centre-back in the summer.

The La Liga giants will be in the market for a new defender in the summer as Carles Puyol has announced that he will be leaving the club in the summer.

France international Mathieu would be a ready-made replacement for Vertonghen as he has experienced playing in Europe's top leagues.

The 30-year-old defender made his name in Ligue 1 with Sochaux and Toulouse, before sealing a move to La Liga outfit Valencia.

Tottenham would have to pay around £17million for Mathieu and face stiff competition from Monaco.
