Arsenal’s club-record signing Mesut Ozil will silence his critics and cement his status as the Premier League’s best player next season, according to Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm.

Ozil has been heavily criticised following a string of below-par performances in recent weeks, but Lahm has tipped the Gunners’ £42.5m playmaker to showcase his true abilities next season.

The Germany international told reporters of his international colleague: "Mesut is in a new league - but next season he can be the best player in England. He has the attitude and desire to do that.”

The lowest point so far of Ozil’s Arsenal career came last month at the Emirates Stadium, where he missed a penalty against Lahm’s Bayern Munich and was left chasing shadows all night. However, the 25-year-old has an opportunity to make amends this evening, when the Gunners will do all they can to overturn a 2-0 first leg defeat in the Champions League last 16 against Bayern at the Allianz Arena.

Ozil has rediscovered some much-needed confidence over the last week and managed to score his first goal since December during Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final victory over Everton. Lahm, though, believes the former Real Madrid star has nothing to prove to anyone.

"Anybody who has played with Mesut knows what an exceptional player he is," Lahm added. "He has been a success wherever he has played, and he is the dream for any attacking players, because he finds space and passes that very few players in the world are able to see.

"He is one of the most gifted and intelligent players in Europe, and I think his assist record says everything you need to know about him."

Indeed, Ozil had produced more assists than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues when he joined the Gunners last summer.

Arsenal supporters will be hoping he can notch up a few more in Munich this evening.
