The Atlanta Braves are closing in on a deal for free agent Ervin Santana, according to sources at CBS Sports.

It only emerged this week that the Braves had entered the race for Santana after suffering injuries on successive days to pitchers Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy.

The Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles were thought to be the only ones fighting for the starting pitcher but it seems the Braves have gazumped both of them in a matter of days.

According to reports, Santana has agreed a one-year deal with the Braves.

As previously mentioned, Atlanta's sudden interest in Santana comes as a result of injuries to Medlen and Beachy. The former will go for a second opinion on his elbow after the team announced an issue with his ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.

Beachy is also expected to miss a start after experiencing tightness in his elbow, forcing him out of the Braves' latest game after just two innings.

The Braves were always favourites to sign Santana as the player is believed to prefer a National League team.

He only decided to pursue a one-year deal after failing to receive the original four-year deal he was after.
