New York Red Bulls head coach, Mike Petke has agreed to a new contract according to New York daily news.

The terms of the contract have not been released, although it is thought to be a long-term extension.

Petke, 38, led the team to the MLS Supporters' Shield in his first year as head coach in 2013. The trophy marked the first silverware that the team had won in 18 years.

"Mike is a passionate coach with great potential and this improved contract is the club's way of recognizing last season's Supporters' Shield success," said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. "In the highly competitive MLS, winning the regular season title last year was a great achievement and provides Mike and the club with a good platform to build on."

Petke played for the Red Bulls between 1998 and 2002 when they were known as the New York Metro Stars. He rejoined the team in 2008 for two more season before retiring as their record appearance maker.

The Red Bulls have not started the season in dominant fashion however, they were defeated 4-1 by Vancouver in their season opener. They will play their first home game of the season on Saturday against Colorado.
