Manchester United manager David Moyes has identified five Athletic Bilbao stars as potential summer signings to revitalise his squad ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

Red Devils scouts have run for the rule over the Basque club on several occasions this season - and appear to have provided Moyes with plenty of positive feedback, if this latest report from is anything to go by.

Moyes, who is expected to be given over £100m to spend in the summer transfer market by the Glazer family, has added the following Athletic players to his shortlist: Iker Muniain, Oscar de Marcos, Ander Herrera, Markel Susaeta and Ander Iturraspe.

Manchester United came close to signing Herrera last summer, despite initially being deterred by the midfielder’s €36m release clause. Moyes discovered just how difficult it is to sign players from Athletic Bilbao, whose cantera policy determines that they can only sign Basque players, and the La Liga outfit will make it just as difficult for the reigning Premier League champions to take any of their players to Old Trafford this summer.

Athletic, who currently sit fourth in La Liga and look set to secure a Champions League spot, will demand €36m for each of their contracted players. However, it’s believed that Moyes has put the impressive 25-year-old defensive midfielder Iturraspe at the top of his shortlist.

Moyes appears particularly keen to sign a holding midfielder in order to make his under-performing team a more solid unit - and has been strongly linked with the highly-rated Sporting Lisbon ace William Carvalho in recent weeks. But this latest report suggest it will be Spain, rather than Portugal, where the Manchester United boss spends most of his transfer kitty this summer.
