Daniel Ricciardo has been disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix after his car breached fuel consumption rules.

Red Bull's new addition crossed the finish line in the first race of the 2014 season in second place following an eventful Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, but will receive no points for his efforts.

Ricciardo was passed by the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg at the start of the race, but swiftly skipped past his Lewis Hamilton - who had started in pole position - to retake his place in second.

And, the Aussie managed to maintain his place as other more senior drivers struggled.

Felipe Massa saw his race ended by the Caterham of Kamui Kobayashi, who also made contact with Kimi Raikkonen, but somehow the Ferrari didn't appear damaged, and went on to finish in eighth position.

Four-time World Champion, Sebastien Vettel had problems throughout the formation laps, and lacked power from the start. He wasn't helped by a spin from Esteban Gutierrez on the third turn. In the end, Vettel was forced to retire after just five laps.

Vettel did, however, last longer than Pole sitter, Lewis Hamilton, who pulled into the garage after a misfiring cylinder.

It all appeared to be to Ricciardo's advantage, but he's paid the penalty for an apparent team mistake, with his car 'consistently' exceeding the maximum fuel-flow rate of 100kg/h.

Team principle Christian Horner has confirmed that Red Bull will be appealing the FIA's ruling.
