Chelsea open talks over a new deal for John Terry

Chelsea have finally opened contract talks with captain and club stalwart John Terry, reports suggest.

According to The Daily Telegraph, discussions between the two parties have now started but it is likely that Terry will be asked to take a pay cut on his current £150,000-per-week wages.

33-year-old Terry has been with Chelsea since 1995 but the same reports suggest that the player had become frustrated with just how long it was taking the club to open such talks to extend a his deal which is due to expire this summer.

Chelsea - who currently lead the Premier League going into this weekend's keenly-anticipated clash against fellow title rivals Arsenal - have generally followed a policy of offering one-year contracts to players over the age of 30 in recent times and it is as of yet unclear if this will be the case here.

While last season it may not have been so unthinkable for Chelsea to have said goodbye to Terry at the end of his current deal at Stamford Bridge, his form for the Blues under Jose Mourinho this season has made it frankly imperative that they extend his stay a little longer.

Evidently rejuvenated by the return of the manager for whom he won back-to-back Premier League titles in the mid 2000s, Terry has been nothing short of magnificent in the heart of Chelsea's defence and has forged a solid partnership with compatriot Gary Cahill.

Such impressive form has even seen fans speculate on a possible return to the England fold ahead of this summer's World Cup in Brazil, but this has to be considered extremely unlikely given Terry's complicated and fractured relationship with the international setup.

While Terry appears set to prolong his Chelsea career, however, it is still not apparent what the club has planned for the future of fellow club legends Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard who are also set to be out of contract this summer.

While Lampard still enjoys a similar influence at the club, Cole - whose World Cup place could soon come under threat - has been largely confined to the substitute's bench in recent months as Mourinho has opted for right-back Cesar Azpilicueta.
