Liverpool have been placed on red alert following reports that Arsenal target Mathieu Valbuena could leave Marseille at the end of the season.

The London Metro reports how the 29-year-old playmaker's eight-year association with the Ligue 1 club might be about to come to an end, having recently intimated a desire to experience a new challenge abroad.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers was heavily linked with a move for the France international in January, and is set to renew his attempts to lure Valbuena to Anfield when the transfer window reopens this summer.

Liverpool could face competition from Arsenal for the attacking midfielder's signature, with Arsene Wenger also understood to be a long-term admirer of the player.

However, Arsenal are well stocked with creative midfield options at the Emirates Stadium at the moment, so it's by no means certain they would make a bid to rival Rodgers.

French newspaper L'Equipe is adamant that Valbuena will leave Stade Velodrome this summer though, as part of a mass exodus with the likes of Andre Ayew, Steve Mandanda and Nicolas N'Koulou also heading for the exit.
