British boxer Amir Khan has revealed that Floyd Mayweather told him in a recent phone conversation that they will go head-to-head in the ring at a later date.

Khan had prepared himself for a big-money fight against the WBC welterweight champion on May 3 in Las Vegas, but Mayweather decided instead to take on Marcos Maidana following the Argentinian’s surprise victory over Adrien Broner. However, the 27-year-old is optimistic that the biggest fight of his career will still happen after having a chat with the pound-for-pound king.

"I spoke to Floyd funnily enough a week after he'd announced his fight with Maidana," he told Ringside. "My friend called me and asked if I wanted to talk to Floyd and I said 'put him on the phone' and Floyd said 'how are you doing champ?'.

"I said 'I'm alright, but... why didn't you take the fight? What was the issue?'

“And he said 'listen champ, you're a great fighter, I respect you. The fight will happen, you know. I have a few more fights left in my career and it will happen between me and you - just not yet'."

Khan rejected the chance to fight American boxer Devon Alexander last November out of fear that he would suffer an injury ahead of a potential bout with Mayweather, but the Bolton-born star admits he regrets his decision. However, he is now looking forward to appearing on the undercard as chief supporter to Mayweather v Maidana at the MGM Grand.

"Golden Boy got back to me and said 'you can fight May 3' on the Floyd card as chief support'," Khan added. "I thought it was a good idea because I'd be in his face plus Maidana is a guy I have already beaten, so I might steal a little of the attention from him!"

Mayweather is the overwhelming favourite to defeat Maidana, but many believe the 37-year-old ducked Khan because he was concerned about the Brit’s superior speed.
