Cristiano Ronaldo must emulate Zidane before he is 'great', says Carragher

Cristiano Ronaldo has been told that he cannot be considered one of football's 'greats' until he can emulate some of the feats achieved in the career of Zinedine Zidane.

According to Jamie Carragher, the Real Madrid superstar is a sensational player but he will have to make a defining contribution on the biggest stage before he can be considered anything else. Ronaldo was named the best player in the world for 2013 when he was awarded the FIFA Ballon d'Or, but the Liverpool legens said that wasn't enough.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, Carragher suggested that Zidane made himself one of the sport's greatest players for his heroics in major finals. He scored twice in the 1998 World Cup final against Brazil and then scored what the former England international called the best goal of the Champions League era against Bayer Leverkusen in the final at Hampden Park in 2002.

Ronaldo has won the Champions League with Manchester United, scoring in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea that the Red Devils went on to win on penalties, but Carragher claimed his actions did not define that game. Ronaldo may get a chance to make the difference this year, as Madrid have looked impressive in the competition so far, with their star man already having bagged 13 goals in the competition.

One other thing that may grate with Ronaldo is that Carragher claims the Portuguese's arch rival at Barcelona, Lionel Messi, can be considered one of the greats. He believes that Messi's goals in the Catalan club's two recent Champions League victories  capped off dominant displays that secured his reputation.

Ronaldo and Messi will go face-to-face on Sunday for the second El Clasico of the season in La Liga. Madrid lead La Liga by three points ahead of city rivals Atletico, while Barcelona are four points back and will need a win at the Santiago Bernabeu if they are to have any hope of retaining their title.
