Manchester United confirmed on Friday that Robin van Persie faces four to six weeks out with the knee injury suffered in Wednesday's Champions League last-16 second leg victory over Olympiakos at Old Trafford.
The deadly Dutchman delivered a man of the match performance after scoring a hat-trick to fire the Red Devils into the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club competition.
However, the match ended on a sour note as Van Persie was carried off on a stretcher, and could now miss the remainder of the 2013/14 campaign, which will come as a huge blow to David Moyes and his players.
Doubts also remain about the Manchester United star's World Cup chances, with the striker needing to prove his fitness before being named in Louis van Gaal's 23-man Holland squad bound for Brazil this summer.
Van Persie joins a growing number of Premier League stars unlikely to feature again this term, having seen their season wrecked by an untimely injury.
