Jason Spezza had the last laugh against former teammate Ben Bishop last night as the Ottawa Senators snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Spezza had a goal in regulation and scored the only goal in the shootout to secure the win and a vital two points for Ottawa. It was a bit of a lucky win for the Senators, in my opinion. The team took way too many careless penalties which allowed the Lightning to score twice and force the game to overtime.
However, Senators goaltender Robin Lehner made several key saves throughout the game to keep his team from falling behind. In fact, that’s the best game I’ve seen him play in a long time.
He made 35 saves on the night and stopped all Lighting shooters in the shootout, including Steven Stamkos. Hopefully, Lehner’s performance in goal will give this Senators team a much needed boost.
This team has been down and out for a while and it’s nice to finally see this losing streak snapped.
For the Tampa Bay Lightning, this was a critical loss. However, the team did get one point and Stamkos continues to score goals consistently. This loss puts the team in a tie for third with the Montreal Canadians.
But I don’t believe it’s time for this team to enter panic mode yet. Yes, things are tight in the Eastern Conference standings.
However, Tampa Bay's next two games are against the Islanders and the Sabres. These are teams that the Lightning should be able to beat.
The real challenge will be when they have to face Montreal in April. I believe the Lightning will be able to easily secure a playoff spot with the squad they have. If Ben Bishop can steal a few games and Stamkos continues to score, this team will be just fine.
