Chelsea, like Manchester City, have spent far more than they have been able to recoup in transfers since the arrival of Roman Abramovich in west London, with the likes of Fernando Torres and Eden Hazard signing for significant fees.
The last year or so has, however, presented something of a different approach as Chelsea try to fall in line with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations, and the club have made more notable sales of late.
Juan Mata was the most prominent of these, with the Spanish playmaker joining Manchester United for £37.1 million - a club record fee for the Premier League champions.
