Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has a tale of woe that has become all too familar for under-performing players at the highest level, shunned by their manager after failing to shine and unable to show their true class despite doing everything in their power to turn the ride.

Torres has the sympathy of an overwhelming majority of neutral fans because he was at one time arguably the most feared marksman on the continent, leading the line for Liverpool and Spain with a predatory instinct that at times made him simply unplayable, just ask Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic.

There comes a time when managers like Blues boss Jose Mourinho decide to cut their losses and ship out an under-fire star who is simply not able to cut it at the highest level, however brilliant their highlight reel may be.
