Manchester United's pursuit of Ezequiel Garay has been boosted by the news that interested club, Zenit St Petersburg, are switching their attentions to another target.
According to the Daily Express, new Zenit manager Andre Villas-Boas is ready to raid old club Tottenham Hotspur for Jan Vertonghen.
That would mean United manager David Moyes is free to make a move for the Benfica centre-back Garay as he looks to overhaul his squad following a disappointing maiden campaign in charge.
United have long been linked with a move for the Argentine defender but an attempt to land the 27-year-old by Sir Alex Ferguson, before he stepped down at Old Trafford, was unsuccessful.
The Red Devils are expected to make a centre-back their number one priority in the transfer market this summer after it was revealed that captain Nemanja Vidic is to leave at the end of this season.
Russian club Zenit nearly tied up a deal for the highly-rated Garay in January before his Portuguese club pulled-out of the deal.
Garay is renowned as one of the top defenders in European club football ever since he was snapped up by Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2008.
Although he only made 31 La Liga appearances for 'Los Blancos', the defender has had great success after moving to Benfica in 2011. They narrowly missed out on winning the Europa League last season when Chelsea beat them in the final.
The 18-cap international is also expected to be lining-up alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero for Argentina in the World Cup this summer.
