Why Evra holds the key to Manchester United's progression

Manchester United fans will be pinning their hopes on Wayne Rooney tonight as the Premier League champions' star striker is likely to be the man to inject some creativity and flair into David Moyes' side.

However it is the Red Devils' defence that will have to be at their very best if their side are going to have any chance of progressing to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Bayern Munich have scored goals for fun in Germany and Europe this season - due to the attacking options Pep Guardiola has at his disposal.

Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Mario Mandzukic are just some of the names the Spaniard can call on tonight if Bayern Munich are in need of a goal, however it is Arjen Robben who is likely to be the biggest threat to Manchester United's chances of progressing to the latter stages of the competition.

Moyes is likely to plump with the experienced Evra over deputy left-back Alex Buttner tonight - despite the fact the Dutchman performed admirably in the first leg.

Evra has often been accused of failing to have the legs to keep up with Europe's best wingers this season, however tonight is the night the Frenchman can silence his doubters.

The 32-year-old, who is likely to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer at the end of the season, will want to end his eight-year affiliation with Manchester United on a high - and what better way to do that than helping Moyes' side progress to the semi-finals.

Robben seems to be extremely successful at pulling off the same predictable move during every attack. You know he is going to cut in onto his left foot - but he generally seems to get the better of his opponent.

Evra however has the experience and nous to deal with Robben if he is able to replicate the kind of form that saw him evolve into one of the best full-backs in Europe.

Forget the likes of Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa for one minute - as I believe it is Evra who could help Manchester United defy the odds by knocking out the current holders of the world's most prestigious competition.
