Wayne Rooney admitted he was left disappointed after Manchester United's 3-1 defeat against Bayern Munich last night, which resulted in David Moyes's side crashing out of the Champions League.

After a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the quarter-final first leg at Old Trafford last week, the Red Devils knew that victory at the Allianz Arena would've booked their place in the semi-finals of Europe's elite club competition.

Patrice Evra's stunning second-half strike to break the deadlock in Germany allowed the travelling supporters to believe they could progress at the expense of the current holders, but Pep Guardiola's side hit back with three quick-fire goals from Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben to secure a 4-1 aggregate win.

Reflecting on Wednesday's European encounter Rooney told fans on his official Facebook page: "Really disappointed with the result last night.

"We fought hard against a good team but unfortunately it wasn't to be. Thanks to all the travelling fans who supported us until the end."

With Manchester United way off the Premier League pacesetters, the Bayern Munich defeat ended any chance of winning major silverware in what has been a disappointing debut campaign for Moyes as manager.

And, with a top four finish looking beyond his side this season, it's unclear when Manchester United or Rooney will next grace the Champions League competition.
