Manchester United’s interim manager Ryan Giggs could drop club-record signing Juan Mata from his first-ever starting line-up - Saturday’s Premier League clash against Norwich City at Old Trafford.

The Telegraph report that Giggs is set to bring fringe players Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck back into the first 11, following the dismissal of David Moyes on Tuesday, and could drop Mata and Marouane Fellaini down to the substitutes’ bench.

Both Mata and Fellaini were brought to the club by Moyes, who agreed to pay Everton £27.5m and Chelsea £37.1m respectively for the two midfielders earlier this season.

Fellaini has struggled in his debut campaign at Old Trafford, while Mata’s form has picked up recently, although the Spain international failed to make an impact during last weekend’s abject 2-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

That result led to United officials agreeing to sack Moyes, who is believed to have lost the support of his players over the course of recent months.

Giggs will not be considered for the Manchester United vacancy, but has four games to showcase his managerial credentials. The Red Devils’ record appearance holder has drafted in youth team coach Nicky Butt as his temporary assistant, while United legend - and a fellow member of the Class of ’92 - Paul Scholes has also returned to help out in training sessions.

Giggs, Butt and Scholes - along with Phil Neville, who has retained his place on the coaching staff for the time being - will attempt to help the club secure a top-six finish by securing victories against Norwich, Sunderland, Hull City and Southampton in their final four Premier League fixtures.
