The man many believe is close to becoming Manchester United’s next boss, Louis van Gaal, has reportedly singled out Mats Hummels as his priority transfer target for what should be an interesting summer window.
Speculation has been growing in recent days that the reigning Premier League champions are on the verge of making Van Gaal David Moyes’ replacement, and the Mirror now reports that the Dutchman is keen to strengthen what has been an alarmingly shaky back line this season. Hummels has in the past been linked with a move Old Trafford, but it’s believed that Van Gaal can succeed where others have failed in luring him to Manchester, because of his reputation.
Rated at £30million the German centre-back, who has been impressive for Borussia Dortmund over the last two seasons, is easily affordable for United, who are set to spend up to £100million on improvements.
Of course the capture of Hummels will likely rest on whether or not United do choose to appoint Van Gaal as head coach. Whilst the general consensus is that he is the favourite to secure the position, there do remain other candidates in the frame.
