Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois' impending return to Stamford Bridge could prompt Atletico Madrid to make a surprise move for Newcastle United star Tim Krul this summer, according to talkSPORT.

Courtois has been arguably La Liga's most consistent goalkeeper over the last three seasons, building a reputation that has Europe's best clubs looking enviously at Blues boss Jose Mourinho's dilemma over whether to recall the Belgian ahead of Petr Cech for next season.

The 21-year-old is under contract with the Blues despite shining at Atletico 2011, and with Mourinho expected to recall the stopper this summer Los Rojiblancos chief Diego Simeone as identified Krul as a potential replacement.

Krul is regarded as one of the Premier League's finest young keepers despite Newcastle's terrible recent run of results, a disastrous 2014 which could force the Magpies into wholesale changes in search of a dramatic improvement next season.

Atletico are watching the Dutch international closely and view the commanding stopper as capable of replacing Courtois next season, if Chelsea do indeed decide to bring their loan star to West London next season.

The Spanish giants value Krul at around £10m but could play hard ball in negotiations thanks to turmoil at St James' Park and the 26-year-old's contract situation, although Simeone is still hopeful that Chelsea will agree to let Courtois stay at the Vicente Calderon for another season and render scouting efforts redundant.
