Some of the greatest sportsmen and women of all time have appeared on the front cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. It is one of the highlights of any sporting career. However, when Max Scherzer got his chance on the cover, he wasn't too happy about it.

SI got the Detroit Tigers pitcher on the cover for an article but Scherzer was unhappy that the magazine mentioned his $144 million contract offer.

Scherzer said: “To be on the cover is a very special moment, but I’m also frustrated that they chose to put the contract stuff on the cover."

The pitcher also claimed that SI promised not to build the story around the contract and that he feels like his team was misled, however the magazine have refuted that claim.

Scherzer rejected the Tigers offer of $144 million over six years ahead of this season as he aims to prove that he is worth more than that sum.

The rejection of the offer prompted SI to lead the Scherzer issue with the headline: 'Mad Max's $144 million bet'.

Scherzer's complaints appear to come out of a misunderstanding, and it will serve as a lesson to young stars that their 15 minutes of fame could come at a price.
