Van Persie to make bench against Sunderland

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie is expected to feature against Sunderland on Saturday after recovering from a troublesome knee injury.

The Dutchman has not played a competitive game for Manchester United since the middle of March when he sustained the injury against Olympiakos in the Champions League.

Van Persie has missed eight games for Manchester United since being stretchered off in the last 16 clash against the Greek outfit.

A lot has changed at Old Trafford since Van Persie's last appearance for Manchester United as David Moyes has been dismissed from his role at the club.

Van Persie returned to Manchester United's Aon training complex soon after Moyes had been sacked, which prompted rumours that the former Arsenal captain had fallen out with the Scotsman.

Interim manager Ryan Giggs is unlikely to throw Van Persie straight back into the deep end - but may call on his services from the substitutes' bench during the second half of Saturday's encounter at Old Trafford.
