Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to make a move to bring Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane to Stamford Bridge this summer.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the Chelsea manager will look to sign the young French international to strengthen his defence with John Terry approaching the end of his Chelsea career and David Luiz not trusted at centre-half.

Varane was a regular in the Real Madrid team under Jose Mourinho but a combination of injury problems and a loss of confidence has cost him his place under Mourinho’s replacement, Carlo Ancelotti.

The ex-Chelsea man has instead opted for Sergio Ramos and Pepe at the heart of his Real Madrid back-line, and Varane has been unable to dislodge either.

As a result, Mourinho is hoping to capitalise on the situation by submitting a bid this summer for the defender, who he ranks among the best in the world.

He was impressed by his performances at Madrid when under his tutelage, and Varane is one of the few young players Mourinho has trusted to put straight into the first-team during his management.
