Arsenal to scout £15m-rated Morgan Schneiderlin

Arsenal will send scouts to run the rule over Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, who Arsene Wenger is considering making a £15m bid for this summer.

The Daily Mail report that scouts will be in attendance at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon, when Southampton take on Manchester United in their final fixture of the 2013/14 Premier League campaign, to take a close look at the tenacious 24-year-old.

Schneiderlin has excelled for Southampton since the south-coast club were promoted back to the top flight in 2012. And while he may not have grabbed as many headlines as teammates Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Rickie Lambert this season, he has still been a vital cog in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Wenger has identified Schneiderlin, a former France Under-21 international, as a potential long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta, who turns 32 in March and only has one year left on his contract. There was recently speculation for that Spaniard could even leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, which would pave the way for Schneiderlin to cement a first-team place with the Gunners from the start of next season.

It’s believed that Wenger only regards Mathieu Flamini as back-up, rather than a first-team regular, so if scouts are left impressed by Schneiderlin’s performance this weekend there appears to be a good chance that an offer will made over the forthcoming months.

Arsenal are determined to bolster this squad following another average campaign - and Schneiderlin, who has yet to receive his first international cap, could be the man to add some much-needed steel to their midfield.
