Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira - and are prepared to pay in the region of £36m to bring the Germany international to Stamford Bridge this summer.
The Daily Star say Spanish sources are reporting that Jose Mourinho is keen to reunite with the player he brought to the Bernabeu for £10m back in July 2010. Khedira played a starring role at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, and was snapped up by the Spanish giants along with teammate Mesut Ozil.
The 27-year-old, who is most effective in a holding role, went on to establish himself as a key player in Mourinho’s team, but has missed most of the current campaign with a serious knee injury sustained on international duty in November.
Khedira is poised to return from his lengthy lay-off, and could make his first appearance for six months in tonight’s La Liga clash against Valladolid, but Luka Modric and Xabi Alonso have established themselves as guaranteed starters under Carlo Ancelotti - leaving Khedira down the pecking order.
Mourinho, subsequently, has sensed his opportunity to pounce. Khedira, who labelled himself as "one of Mourinho’s disciples” earlier this season, was one of the few Real Madrid star who did not fall out with the Portuguese coach during his final, ill-fated campaign at the Bernabeu.
Despite paying Benfica £21m in January to secure the services of Nemanja Matic, who has settled in well on his return to Stamford Bridge, Mourinho remains determined to sign the world-class defensive midfielder who could yet go to Brazil as part of Germany’s 23-man World Cup squad this summer.
