Atletico Madrid are weighing up a move for Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo as they continue their search for a replacement for Chelsea bound star Diego Costa this summer.

Sport Witness reports how the Spain international has been identified by Diego Simeone for a potential return to La Liga, just 12 months after leaving Sevilla in an initial £16.4 million deal.

Despite an impressive start to his career at the Etihad Stadium the 28-year-old has suffered a significant dip in form in the past few months, failing to register a single goal for Manuel Pellegrini's side since the middle of January.

With Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko the Chilean coach's preferred options in attack, Negredo has been forced to settle for a bit-part role in the first-team.

And, according to El Confidencial, the Manchester City marksman is now on the radar of Atletico Madrid despite his recent profligacy in front of goal for the newly-crowned Premier League champions.

With Costa heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer - as Jose Mourinho looks to strengthen his forward line - Negredo could prove to be an astute signing, with less than half the money received from Chelsea likely to be spent on acquiring his services.
