Liverpool favourites to sign Karim Benzema

Liverpool have been described as “favourites” to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema with Arsenal reportedly on the verge of activating a buy-back clause in the contract of Real Sociedad forward Carlos Vela.

The Daily Star claim Liverpool could jump to the front of the queue to sign the £30m-rated France international, with the Gunners now preoccupied with bringing Vela back to the Emirates Stadium. The Mexican, who left Arsenal in 2011 after failing to cement a place in the first team, has been superb in La Liga, scoring 41 goals in 106 appearances.

Arsenal would need to pay just £3.2m to trigger the clause in Vela’s contract - making him a considerably cheaper option than Benzema, who could be used as a makeweight in a deal to bring Luis Suarez to the Bernabeu this summer.

It was reported last weekend that Real Madrid are poised to make a £60m bid for the Premier League’s top scorer. Suarez ended the 2013/14 campaign having scored a magnificent 31 goals in 33 appearances, his inspirational performances at Anfield putting Los Blancos on red alert.

Liverpool are determined to keep Suarez at the club, but if the player decides he wants to leave - for the second time in as many summers - then the prospect of securing the services of Benzema, who has been one of Europe’s best strikers this season, would no doubt soften the blow.
