Arsenal will have to spend at least £45 million if they hope to sign Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria.

This is according to reports from Spain cited by The Daily Express, which claim that the La Liga giants are demanding an extra £13 million for the Argentine international after the Gunners lodged a £32 million offer earlier this week.

Arsenal are unaccustomed to paying such extravagant transfer fees in recent years, with last summer's record purchase of playmaker Mesut Ozil - a former teammate of Di Maria's at the Santiago Bernabeu - coming as somewhat of a pleasant surprise for supporters.

Long-serving manager Arsene Wenger clearly viewed Ozil's hefty price tag as a fee worth paying and it appears that Arsenal may recognise a similar talent in Di Maria if speculation that they have made a bid proves to be correct.

However, any hopes of landing Di Maria for a reasonable fee appear unlikely, not least because the 26-year-old's current deal in Spain is not due to expire for another four years.

While Arsenal do appear to be hot on the former Benfica star's trial, it remains to be seen if the club or Wenger will agree to such pricey demands.

A talented winger, Di Maria would certainly improve Wenger's options at the Emirates Stadium and would provide an upgrade over a number of the Frenchman's existing midfielders.

Whether he is truly worth £45 million is a matter for considerable debate, though. Di Maria has made 33 domestic appearances so far this season - scoring four goals - as Real Madrid's title hopes were sadly dashed during the penultimate round of fixtures.

Arsenal fans, should your club pay £45 million for Di Maria or should Wenger now move onto other targets? Have your say in the comment box provided below.
