Barcelona star and four-time player of the year Lionel Messi has agreed a new contract with the club that is set make him once again the world’s highest paid player.
The Argentine, 26, only extended his deal with The Catalans last February, but a bigger and
better deal has now been agreed according to BBC Sport, with Messi now set to
earn a net profit of €20million per season, plus performance-linked bonuses.
He has had another wonderful season for Barca, scoring 41 goals in 43 games in all competitions.
"Barcelona has reached an agreement to adjust the terms in the contract binding Leo Messi
to the club as a professional first team player," an official statement reads.
"The revised and updated contract will be signed over the next few days."
Reports suggest that the new contract will tie Messi down at the Nou Camp until 2019,
although it has not been confirmed by the club exactly how long the contract is.
It has been rumoured recently that Messi was unsettled at the club, with Manchester City and PSG both being linked with a mega-money move for him.
However, the signing of a new contract has now surely put these rumours to rest.
Barcelona are the reigning champions in Spain and have the chance to reclaim their title
this weekend if they beat Atletico Madrid at home in a winner-takes-all fixture
as their final game of the season.
