Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck will wear the No. 11 shirt - but for England at this summer’s World Cup finals, rather than for the Red Devils.

United are, of course, looking to pass on their famous No. 11 shirt after Ryan Giggs brought an end to his 23-year playing career earlier this week. But Welbeck will have an opportunity to stake his claim for the iconic jersey by producing some eye-catching performances in Brazil wearing No. 11 on the back of his England shirt.

The FA have revealed which players have been assigned shirt numbers 1-23 at this summer’s showpiece international tournament - and Welbeck has been handed a jersey which suggests he could be a starter for England’s first group stage match against Italy on June 14.

Welbeck’s club teammate Wayne Rooney is handed the No. 10 shirt, while Liverpool’s in-form forward Daniel Sturridge will wear No. 9. Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will wear the number made famous in recent years by David Beckham - No. 7 - while Chelsea veteran Frank Lampard takes the No. 8 jersey.

There are now just three weeks to go before the 2014 World Cup finals get underway - and England will play their first warm-up match against Peru at Wembley next Friday. Roy Hodgson’s side will then take on Ecuador and Honduras before their opening group match against the Azzurri a week later.
