Top Manchester United target Toni Kroos reportedly expects to join Barcelona this summer.

According to Le 10 Sport, carrying reports from Spanish newspaper Sport, the Germany international believes he will join the La Liga giants rather than Manchester United. In fact, reports earlier today carried quotes from Kroos that effectively killed United's interest in the midfielder.

United had hoped to make Kroos one of the marquee signings this summer but it looks like they face more disappointment. It's a similar story that the problems they suffered last summer, when they tried and failed to sign several top European midfielders.

And this year they cannot offer the carrot of Champions League football. They finished seventh in the Premier League next season, which partly contributed to the removal of David Moyes. Louis Van Gaal is set to replace interim boss Ryan Giggs after the World Cup.

A few days ago Bayern president Karl Hopfner confirmed that the Bundesliga champions would not improve their contract offer, which seemed to give hope to United.

That seems to have died now though, and the Spanish report claims that Barcelona are closely watching developments. Xavi is coming towards the end of his career while speculation mounts over the future of Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song.

So a few departures could open up a position for Kroos at the Nou Camp.
