Arsenal are set to open talks with Stoke City over the potential purchase of Asmir Begovic in an £8million deal, as Arsene Wenger looks to begin the summer strengthening of his squad.

The Gunners clinched the F.A Cup in dramatic style last weekend and Arsenal club chiefs have since promised that they will be looking to spend big in order to guarantee success. It’s said that Wenger has been afforded £100million to spend over the course of the transfer window, and apparently the Frenchman has wasted little time in honing in on his preferred acquisitions.

With Lukasz Fabianski and loanee Emiliano Viviano both set to depart the Emirates Stadium in the coming weeks Wenger is desperate to ensure that he has another goalkeeper on the books to challenge Wojciech Szczesny for the No.1 spot, and Begovic has proven during his time at Stoke that he is a reliable stopper when called upon. The Metro claims that senior Arsenal officials are preparing to hold talks with their counterparts at the Britannia Stadium in the next few days, and are confident that £8million will enough to convince Mark Hughes and co. to sell.

Stoke have Jack Butland waiting in the wings for his opportunity to stake a claim for a first-team place, and the sale of Begovic could raise funds which would allow Hughes to focus on improving his own squad.
