Ramon Vega exclusive: Pochettino was the best option

The right man for the job, according to Ramon Vega

Former-Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega told GiveMeSport in an exclusive interview that Spurs got the best manager available in Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs signed Pochettino on a five-year contract after the Argentinian handed in his resignation at Southampton. And Vega believes Tottenham have a good manager on their hands.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Vega said: "Of all the options that were there for Spurs, I think it's a very good option. He's got experience of the Premier League, he's done a good job with Southampton in a very short period - so looking at all the options available, he was a very good choice."

Spurs were linked with a number of managers following the departure of Tim Sherwood at the end of the season, including Ajax boss Frank De Boer.

But Vega believes Tottenham had their chance to appoint a big-name manager after the removal of Andre Villas-Boas.

"In the past there was Van Gaal, and before they got Tim Sherwood they had the opportunity to get a big shot [manager] but I think they missed the boat. But of all the options now, they got the best manager."

Pochettino's Southampton drew praise from neutrals last season for their high-tempo pressing style of football, and you only have to look at how many Saints players have been linked with moves away from St Mary's Stadium to understand just how good a job Pochettino did on the south coast.

But to enjoy the same kind of success at White Hart Lane, Vega thinks Spurs chairman Daniel Levy needs to give him time.

"The club needs some stability," Vega continued. "It's been two managers in the last year. AVB started a completely new season with completely new players, and some of the players didn't really work out, some didn't integrate properly.

"What Pochettino has to take on is to reorganise the club and the team with the players he has, and to potentially add some quality players. But he will definitely bring some skilful football [to Spurs]. And that's what Spurs fans want to see."
