Despite a ball of the 2014/2015 season not having been kicked, it has not stopped Italian giants Inter Milan from eyeing Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone when current manager Walter Mazzarrri’s contract expires next summer, according to reports in Italy.
The Serie A outfit, who endured a below-par season, have already begun the rebuilding process with the transfer of Nemanja Vidic and courting of Blackpool midfielder Thomas Ince and believe the Argentine is the perfect man to herald in a new era of success at the San Siro.
Simeone represented the Nerazzurri between the years of 1997 and 1999, and guided Atletico to the La Liga title and final of the Champions League last term.
They were within minutes of victory in that final before rivals Real Madrid broke hearts with a late equaliser from Sergio Ramos, whilst Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo all netted to rob Simeone of a maiden European victory.
His victorious side is expected to see many fan favourites depart from the Vincente Calderon, with Diego Costa, Thiago and Thibaut Courtois all tipped to be at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea next year, whilst centre-back Miranda has emerged as a target for Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United.
The losses of such instrumental figures could prove devastating, and could prompt Simeone to look for a new club if he feels he cannot sustain the success Atleti fans have grown so accustomed to in the past few years.
His negative style of play coupled with his success and charisma have drawn comparisons with a former Inter manager, Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese is still a much revered figure around the blue and black part of Milan, having guided Inter to an unprecedented treble back in 2010, and is another reason why Simeone appears such an attractive option.
He is a big name boasting huge prestige that would also make Internazionale a force in the transfer market once again. Not since the addition of Wesley Sneijder in 2009 from Real Madrid have the Italian giants added a player that could be described as world class or marquee.
In addition to the signing of Vidic and pursuit of Ince, the Italian giants are expected to bid for Fernando Torres and also hold hope of snaring Erik Lamela away from Tottenham Hotspur after a difficult first season in English football.
It is a period of transition at the San Siro after the departures of Javier Zanetti, Walter Samuel, Estaban Cambiasso and Diego Milito.
And Simeone is the man Inter want to see them return to superpower status once again.
