Roma are plotting a sensational move for Chelsea starlet Romelu Lukaku, and could be inclined to use highly sought after centre-back Mehdi Benatia to sweeten a deal to sign him.

The Express tells how the Serie A giants, who finished second in the Serie A after an impressive campaign under Rudi Garcia last term, are eyeing a move for Lukaku as they look to prepare for Champions League football. The report claims that Roma are aware of interest from Chelsea in their Moroccan central defender Benatia, and could use it to their advantage with regards to landing Lukaku ahead of his other suitors.

The Belgian forward has many admirers following a second consecutive prolific campaign on loan in the Premier League, but Jose Mourinho doesn’t seem entirely convinced of his ability to effectively lead Chelsea’s line. The fact that the Special One has focused the bulk of his energy on landing Diego Costa, whilst reportedly having told Demba Ba that he has a future at Stamford Bridge would indicate that he doesn’t see Lukaku as an indispensable asset. On top of that are the 21-year-old forward’s recent comments which confirmed he would be open to a move away if it would guarantee him game-time.

Naturally a move to Roma, and a chance to play in the Champions League, would appeal to the prodigal striker, and the fact that Benatia could be involved might force his current club’s hand into selling him. The 28-year-old defender is experienced and at the right age to be able to adapt to the pressure that comes with playing in England’s top flight.

The Blues will face a fight from the likes of Manchester City and United if they want to land the Roma star, but Lukaku’s importance to the Italian side puts them in a very favourable position.
