Do the United States have a chance at the World Cup?

United States fans will be out in force in the World Cup in Brazil which is starting on Thursday, but can the players they are there to cheer on perform a mini-miracle and escape from the 'Group of Death' that is Group G.

It will not be easy at all, Jurgen Klinsmann himself went out and said that there is no way they can win the tournament (naturally), and just advancing from their group will be an achievement in itself from the USMNT and the American Outlaws would be partying in the streets of Recife if they reach the second round.

Jurgen Klinsmann's charges have the displeasure of having to come out of the games against Germany, Portugal and Ghana with a minimum of at least 4 points to even be in with a chance of qualifying.

But when you break things down it is an entirely plausible possibility. Kicking off proceedings with a win against Ghana on Monday should be the expectation. The African nation are ranked more than 20 places below the States in FIFA's latest rankings and despite their exploits in South Africa in 2010, have an awful defence that could be very easily exploited by players like Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley pushing further forward.

The Black Stars are talented going forward however and boast pace and trickery with Kevin Prince-Boateng and Andre Ayew on the flanks. However, if the US deploy the 4-3-2-1 formation they successfully used against Nigeria, that attacking threat is halted by the defensive midfield trio of Kyle Beckerman, Jermaine Jones and Ale Bedoya sweeping up in transition.

Then there is a Portugal side that managed to draw against the mights of Northern Ireland and Israel twice in qualifying before ultimately scraping through against Sweden in a playoff. Outside of Cristiano Ronaldo there are no real stars barring a creative Joao Moutinho and a defence that could be solid if they wanted to be. A draw is a very feasible possibility here, i mean if Northern Ireland can do it then so could the US surely.

And then there's Germany. The only hope in this game is if Klinsmann makes a deal with his former employers or they decide to go easy after already qualifying. If Germany need a result in this game then the States will be up against it for the full 90 minutes.

USA have an excellent chance to get out of the Group of Death. Don't write them off as the team that will be cannon fodder at the bottom of the standings. A few unexpected blows could well be landed by the Stars and Stripes.
