Arsenal have made a £7million bid to bring Brazilian defender Rodrigo Caio to the club, according to reports.

Metro cites speculation in South America when claiming that the FA Cup winners have made a formal offer for the player following his impressive performances at the recent Toulon tournament.

The Gunners’ chief scout, Steve Rowley, was in attendance at the event in France, and reports in The Daily Mail a fortnight ago claimed he had advised the club to keep tabs on the Sao Paulo centre back.

Less than two weeks later, it appears Arsenal have gone a step further, with Arsene Wenger making a significant offer for the teenager.

Caio recently signed with super agent Jorge Mendes, and it’s claimed that Rowley has already had a meeting with him over the player. Mendes is looking to get the youngster a move to Europe.

Arsenal could offer the centre back that platform, and his versatility means that he could also play in midfield for the Emirates Stadium outfit moving forward.

The 20-year-old would go into the Gunners’ first-team squad if a deal were to be completed, which should also give Wenger hope over the possibility of securing a work permit for the player.

Rising stock

It remains to be seen whether Caio’s current club accept the offer, or look to hold out for more money as his stock continues to rise. Arsenal will be hoping it’s the former, and Wenger has an impressive track record when it comes to developing young talent at the club.

Jack Wilshere has come through the club’s youth system, whilst the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott have flourished after being brought into the Gunners’ programme.
