Manchester United and Liverpool face new competition in the race to sign Ukrainian star Yevhen Konoplyanka, with Roma said to be showing an interest in him.

The Dnipro star has been linked with a move away from his home country for some time now, but as yet no team have been able to prise him away.

He caught the eye of those in England by scoring against the Three Lions during World Cup qualifying. He then further impressed while playing agains Tottenham in the Europa League.

Liverpool were said to be close to a deal for Konoplyanka during the last January transfer window, only for the deal to fall through. Since then a host of Premier League and European clubs have been credited in an interest in him, including Manchester United.

Under new boss Louis van Gaal, Manchester United are looking to perform a major squad overhaul, with Konoplyanka said to be one of the many names on their hitlist. If reports are to be believed then he will cost around £12 million - and if he is available for that price then Liverpool will certainly be taking another look at him.

However he could end up at neither club, with the latest batch of reports suggesting that Roma would like to sign him.

Roma in race?

TalkSPORT say that the Giallorossi are looking for extra options ahead of their return to the Champions League, and that Konoplyanka could well be their man.

Any team looking to secure the services of the 24-year-old will have their work cut out for them - Dnipro owner Ihor Kolomoyskyi has proved to be a difficult character to deal with in the pas, as Liverpool have learned.

He will likely hold out for much more than £12 million for his star player, and given Manchester United's difficulties in getting deals over the line with Sir Alex Ferguson gone, this could be a major stumbling block.

Liverpool fans will want to see a deal for Konoplyanka wrapped up this summer given the length of time they have been tracking him. Manchester United meanwhile may well be preoccupied with landing other transfer targets so may not feature heavily in the race for his services.
