Given his heightened media presence in recent months, it’s no wonder that Paul Scholes has opted to wade in all guns blazing with his thoughts on Manchester United’s proposed move for Southampton’s Luke Shaw.

The flame-haired playmaker revealed in no uncertain terms that he believed paying £34million for the teenage full-back was a bad move, as he’s seen his valuation rise dramatically as the Saints hope to either keep hold of his services or cash in on him at maximum valuation. Though it’s unlikely Louis van Gaal will take too much notice of what’s being said - he usually has his own agenda on such matters - does it warrant food for thought?

With United having been handed a mooted £200million to lavishely spend on bolstering their squad this summer there’s every chance they could begin to take unwanted leaves from their closest rivals’ book. By this I mean Manchester City’s tendancy to overspend simply because they can afford to.

Typically the Red Devils have never been a club to consent to paying over the odds for players they don’t deem worthy, but is Van Gaal about to change all that?

Here we list four players he absolutely has to steer clear of this summer - at least for their current valuations anyway.
